TreasonAuthor: Don Brown

According to the book, this is “Book One” but I couldn’t figure out book one of what series. So I’m assuming the author has written more books involving the same main characters. I would really look forward to reading them if that’s the case.

The book “Treason” has several plot lines that Don Brown, the author, wove together very well. There are two main trials in the book, both taking place in a military court. While the first one is taking place the author is revealing what’s going on in the world that will lead to the second trial. Both trials are necessary for the plot. The first trial pits the two main characters against each other and gives background information on both of them, telling where they’d met before, how they left things when they parted in the past, etc.

In the first trial Diane Colcernian is the defense attorney. She’s trying to prove that her client isn’t guilty of raping a superior officer. Zack Brewer it the prosecutor in both trials. The author is very good at bringing out the “love/hate” relationship Diane and Zack have. This brings a whole new element to the book.

While the first trial is underway, the author jumps around the world telling us about three different attacks that have been perpetrated by men who are loyal to the Islamic faith. This aspect of the book really makes the readers think. Is it possible that our very own military has been infiltrated by those who want to destroy our nation? The second trial centers around those who ordered the men to commit the crimes. The men themselves weren’t ever charged because two of them committed suicide, while the third was murdered.

Another aspect of the book that I found very interesting was how the author wove the main characters’ faith into the story. What place does faith have in the courtroom? Can a prosecutor be a Christian and still do his job well? Can he do his job if he’s unsure of the guilt of the accused? Very thought provoking questions and concepts!

I usually do my reading while on a treadmill. But this book got me so caught up in the plot that I ended up continuing to read it when I was done. It had the perfect level of suspense to make you want to keep going and not put the book down. I highly recommend it.
