Look Great, Feel Great
by Joyce Meyer
I’ve read a lot of books about diet and health. I’ve gotten something to think about from each of them. What I liked about this one was the lack of pressure. The author gives you “12 Keys to Enjoying a Healthy Life Now.” She doesn’t pressure you to do all of them at once. In fact, she warns you not to try to do too much at once but to take things as slowly. If you want to do one key a month and take a whole year to do what she suggests, then she’s all for it.
One of the main reasons people fail is they try to do too much too fast. They want to be
healthy so they get a treadmill and try to run 5 miles uphill on it the first day! The author wants you to read the whole book at once to see the whole picture, but then go back over it slowly and take each key and set up your own plan on how to incorporate it in your life. It takes
time to make each of these keys a good habit that you can make your own.
Another thing I liked about the book is that the author is speaking from years of experience AND from years of doing things the wrong way. She doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to herself and everything she’d done wrong in the past. She comes right out and lets everyone not only know what she used to do, but what effect the behavior had on her.
Each key is set out simply with a lot of information and study to back up what she says. By the time you’ve read the whole book, you’ll really understand how your body works and what effect the things that you do and eat have on it. This information helps you WANT to change, and want to do what’s best for your body. At the end of each chapter she asks that you write out one way you’re going to take action, to incorporate that key in your life. By only asking for one way, the author makes it simple and easy for you to do it, and really make it part of your life.
She adds an epilogue which includes some added information about such things as helping children while they’re young, eating disorders, etc. At the end of the book she includes a checklist that you can use everyday to keep yourself on track. The book ends with “Quick-Fix
Emergency Sheets.” She takes one feeling that you could be having about each of the 12 keys and gives you help as to how to quickly overcome that feeling and get back on track.
Although anyone could benefit from reading this book, I think older readers would appreciate it more. It helps the older reader understand that it’s never too late to start on that road to health!
