When God Knelt Down
Excerpt taken from Furious Pursuit by Tim King and Frank Martin (WaterBrook 2006)
God on his knees!
Can you imagine the sight? The disciples certainly couldn’t.
Jesus was in the Upper Room with his disciples the night before the Passover. For his disciples it was another chance to be with him, to learn from him, to take in a little bit more of his wisdom. But to Jesus it was his final opportunity to show them the full extent of his love. It was his last chance to show his disciples how much they meant to him before the chaos of the Cross would send them scattering in confusion. This was the ideal time and place for an eternal proposal.
Jesus used his final evening with his disciples to give them a word picture they would never forget, one that would burn an indelible image into their hearts and minds. He knew that words might soon be forgotten, but a counterintuitive analogy would stay with them for a lifetime. So he grabbed a towel and basin and dropped to his knees in front of them.
He knelt in the posture of a marriage proposal…
And what was Jesus proposing? He was asking the disciples to become more than followers, more than objects of his pursuit. He wanted them to become eternal partners with him, to become one with him for eternity. Not just to join him in his mission or his ministry but to share in his life, his heart. To become his bride.
That should have been more than enough. But the proposal went even deeper. In his simple act of humility, Jesus was once and for all settling the debate about how the real Pursuer is and whom he is pursuing. Once and for all he laid to rest any doubts about his commitment to the relationship, his dedication to the eternal pursuit of our hearts. No longer can there be any remaining doubt or suspicion about the depth and breath of his love for us…
…Could there be another symbol outside the Cross that is more powerful than our Suitor kneeling in front of us? Could there be any Story in all of Scripture that gives a clearer word picture of God’s furious pursuit of us? Could Jesus have done anything else that would have illustrated more powerfully his passion to have us join our lives with his?
Because of his nature, it is impossible for God not to pursue you. In Furious Pursuit, Tim King and Frank Martin invite you to lay down the smaller story of your life and tap into God’s Larger Story. You can stop relying on yourself and allow God to transform the nature of your relationship with him. Finally, you can stop chasing God and start embracing the Great Romance that is already under way. A romance to be embraced, a courtship to be nurtured and a marriage to be consummated.
