James David JordanJames, describe yourself for our visitors.

I’ve been married for twenty years and have two very normal and nice teenage kids. My wife is the nicest, funniest and prettiest person I’ve ever met. Way too good for me, but don’t tell her.

I am a sports nut, especially baseball. During the day, I am a business lawyer. I help companies resolve business disputes, generally involving contracts or trade secrets.

One of the things that I’ve enjoyed most about Something That Lasts is that it has given me many opportunities to witness to church groups and share my faith.

My musical interest runs from The Doors to Coldplay to George Winston. Eclectic.

How do you find time to connect with God?

I pray many times every day, at the office and at home. Always have, since I was a kid. My family and I attend church every Sunday, of course. I used to teach a young adults Sunday school class, but had to stop when I began writing my book.

Something That Lasts is my first book. Here is the description:

To their quiet community, David Parst, his wife, Sarah, and their twelve-year-old son, Jack, are the ideal minister’s family. Determined and innovative, David has built his tiny suburban church into a regional powerhouse, and along the way has become a local religious celebrity. But a church project throws David together with Erika Balik, a successful female executive, and Sarah senses a troubling change in her husband.

During a crowded Sunday service, Erika’s usually quiet husband rises hesitantly from his pew to make an announcement. No one can imagine that what he is about to say and do will scandalize their community and thrust the Parsts into a thirty-year struggle with God and one another – a struggle to find something that lasts.

Something That Lasts is a touching and sometimes wrenching story of temptation, loss, and forgiveness. It reminds us that in faith and in love, those who persevere receive the reward.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

The idea for Something That Lasts came from my background. I learned when I was about 21 years old that my dad (who is a minister and a great guy) is not my biological father. Later in my life, I tried to meet my biological father, but he refused to meet me. He died before my book came out. I think that all of that led to a lot of the intensity of the father/son relationships in the book. (Unlike Jack Parst, I did not hate my biological father. But I did feel a sense of loss at not having known him.)

What’s next for you?

My second book is in the works. It is a love story wrapped in a Christian action thriller. The lead character is a young woman whose father made a great sacrifice for her. She is a former Secret Service agent and can really take care of herself. She learns a lot about the notion of sacrifice when she is thrown together with a prominent pastor who has received death threats from a terrorist group. Very fun to write!
