Pieces of SilverPIECES OF SILVER
by Maureen Lang

German-American, Liesel Bonner expects life to go on as normal, even with World War I looming in the near future. She is stunned when she’s called into the office of her law job and fired, simply because she is German. Now, she has trouble landing a job. Her salesman boyfriend, Josef von Worener, is encouraging her, but he is gone a lot with his job, so he isn’t a lot of support.

Leisel finally finds another job with the railroad, and at the insistence of her new boss uses a more American name there. This disturbs Leisel, but she understands the necessity of hiding her German identity. At least until Federal Investigator David de Serre forces her to resign her beloved job when he learns her true identity.

Not only did David force Leisel out of her job, now he’s asking her to do the impossible, betray someone she loves. Leisel is torn between her commitment to her faith, her country, and those she loves.

All I can say about Maureen Lang’s book, PIECES OF SILVER, is oh wow. This is truly an awesome book. I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t put it down. Just reading the back cover copy, I didn’t think I would be too interested in the book, but once I picked it up to read, I was instantly hooked and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I read a lot of great books this year, but this one will easily make it to the top ten.

The characters were very realistically developed. All of them could easily be real, our own grandparents or great grandparents. As I am German, I remember my ancestors telling me about this time in history, and a lot of it is verified in Ms. Lang’s book. I highly recommend PIECES OF SILVER and I cannot wait to read the sequel, coming in March 2007, Remember Me. Pick up PIECES OF SILVER today. You will not be disappointed by the powerful story. $12.99. 301 pages.
