ABIDE WITH ME
by Delia Parr
It is Sandra’s birthday, and her three sisters, Andrea, Madge, and Jenny gather to mourn the loss of Sandra and to tell Sandra stories. But the sisters can’t quite get the same enjoyment out of the stories. Sandra isn’t there. And each of the three have their own problems they must deal with.
Andrea, a single mom, has just discovered that her cancer has reoccurred. Now, she’s facing a year of chemotherapy and praying that she might beat the odds and survive. Madge’s storybook life has ended, and she needs to find the power to forgive her husband for his shocking secret. Jenny is pregnant with her third child and wants to keep her husband’s dream alive—whatever the sacrifice.
Will the sisters’ faith see them through the difficult year ahead?
ABIDE WITH ME is Delia Parr’s debut novel in the Inspirational publishing world, and it’s a good story. With a strong sense of family values and sisterhood, readers will long for a family that is as close as the fictional one in this book. Andrea, Madge, and Jenny become real, and the reader is able to completely identify with them.
I don’t usually like books that begin with death, or the characters mourning a loved one, but the sadness is counteracted with gentle humor and friendship. The book is well written and the faith message is expertly woven in. A recipe is included at the end of the book. I can’t wait to read the sequel, Day by Day, coming out in April 2007. 391 pages. $13.95.
