Caught off Guard
Encounter with the Unexpected God
William P. Smith
William P. Smith, a Christian counselor, poses many questions in his book Caught off Guard. Many of these questions he encountered during counseling sessions. After reading, the reader may recognize a few questions they have asked on occasion. Maybe not to a counselor, but it crossed your mind a time or two.
Some questions include:
• Do you feel lost and confused?
• Do you think God’s out to get you?
• Are you worried God won’t help you until your faith gets stronger?
• Do you seize the chances Jesus gives you?
• Are you getting better at confessing your faults?
With a sense a humor and the ease of listening to a good friend, Smith answers these difficult questions that plaque us. He drives the reader to think more about God with their heart verses their head. Most of the time that’s where individuals trip themselves – thinking too much!
Integrating real life experiences along with bible stories make this an effective reading experience. In other words, it doesn’t read like a stuffy textbook on theology. The author clearly knows how to write for an audience seeking to grow in their faith, but don’t want to be talked down to either.
At the end of each chapter, readers are encouraged to think more with the “On Your Own†questions. The chapters are relatively short and could be easily adapted to a small group study or used for devotion time.
