This is an historical novel based in France during the time that Catherine de’ Medici was the Queen Mother. She plays a key role in the novel as the main characters, Rachelle Macquinet and Marquis Fabien de Vendome are under her authority and are put into many dangerous situations because of her. Rachelle and Fabien are in love and want to marry. But the Queen Mother has other plans. She is always planning and scheming to keep a tenuous hold on France. On the one hand she has Spain and the Pope trying to assume power, while she’s trying to deal with the threat of Huguenots on the other.

The author carefully weaves fictional characters in with historical figures. Because of this, the reader gets a real taste of what life was like in the middle 1500s in France by getting a real flavor for what some of the historical figures were like. All the while she weaving in fictional characters to show how hard it was to live during these times, especially when your religion wasn’t the same as that of the Queen Mother. The author goes into detail about the effect that Calvin and his teachings had in France at this time.

This is book three of “The Silk House” series. Be warned, there is at least one more book in the series. This book definitely leaves you wanting more!
