Wagered Heart
by Robin Lee Hatcher
The book opens as Bethany Silverton is walking through the town of Sweetwater, Montana, her new home. It is a small town, one that doesn’t even have a church…yet. That is her goal as she goes from building to building, letting the people know that her father, Reverend Silverton is in town and ready to start preaching. Her friend, Ingrid Johnson, is with her.The only sore spot in the day was the Plains Saloon. There was a rowdy crowd inside, but that was no place for a lady. She turns to head home when she realizes that her dress, one made especially for her by her cousin in Philadelphia, has snagged on a nail. She’s deciding what to do when she hears a deep voice say "Allow me."
She’s soon looking up into the eyes of a stranger, Hawk, who has taken her breath away. After he’s gone Ingrid and Bethany talk about the encounter. Ingrid doesn’t think he’s the kind of man you’d find in church. Bethany, always high spirited and up for a challenge bets Ingrid that she will get Hawk into church within the month. This bet will come back to haunt her.
As the book goes on the author gives us a good look at what life was like back when Montana was about to become a state. It was not an easy life especially when the little town is hit with a cholera epidemic. Without modern medicine it took many lives.
This book is a fun read. There were some curves along the way which made it more interesting. I recommend this book to all ages.
