Diann, describe yourself for our visitors.
My writing ministry has a two fold passion: writing and teaching writing. In addition to teaching at writing conferences, I am a mentor for Jerry Jenkins’ Christian Writer’s Guild. I love to read suspense and historical novels, which is why I write them. When I need time to think, I dive into gardening or cooking. Something about working with my hands relaxes my mind. I love music of all kinds from classical to contemporary Christian.
How do you find time to connect with God?
I make time to connect with God. I’m an early riser – between 4:30 and 5:00. During those quiet hours, I have my quiet time. Then we talk all day.
I’m amazed at the way God blesses me, especially when I consider how easy it is to fail Him. Prayer is a vital part of my life. My spirit experiences "homesickness" when I’m not in communion with Him.
Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?
Oh my! There are so many. Deborah Raney, Tamera Alexander, Angela Hunt, James Scott Bell, Lauraine Snelling, Mindy Clark, Terri Blackstock, Gayle Roper, Colleen Coble, James Patterson, Robert Ludlow – I could go on and on.
As far as favorite books – many rank up at the top. As a girl, Little Women and Jo’s Boys along with Nancy Drew and Trixi Beldon books inspired me to write. My favorite book s coincide with my favorite authors. But the book of the year is The Shack.
Tell us about your journey to publication.
I felt God’s call to write long before I began. Frankly, I was scared to begin! In 1996, my husband dared me to write a book. I guess he was tired of the "some day I’m going to write a book." So he challenged me to quit my job to see if I could get anything published. My first book was released in 1998, and I’m now working on my 43rd. I took on the ministry of writing like a full time job. I read the books in the genre I wanted to write. I read the books about writing. I attended conferences. I networked. I edited and edited.
Tell us about your current book?
Breach of Trust is the first book in the Call of Duty series. For a couple of years, I’d toyed with the idea of an ex-CIA agent who disguised herself as a librarian in rural Oklahoma. She’d resigned from the CIA after a botched mission that got all of her team members killed, due to the team leader’s betrayal. She is forced into hiding until years later when that same man runs for governor of Oklahoma. She has to make a decision whether to come out of hiding or allow the man to rule her adopted state.
How did you come up with ideas for this book?
I have no clue. Everywhere – from bits and pieces of conversations to dreams to news headlines.
List your three most recent books.
- When the Nile Runs Red - contemporary set in Sudan
- Awaken My Heart - historical set in 1803 Texas
- Breach of Trust
What’s next for you?
I’m finishing up a historical entitled A Woman Called Sage, about a lady bounty hunter in the Rocky Mountains. The time period is 1880
